How is Cortex-M0 Different than Cortex-M3?

  • Cortex-M3: ARM's flagship Cortex-M class processor offers superior performance and flexibility
  • Cortex-M0: A streamlined subset of the Cortex-M3, Cortex-M0 offers three key benefits:
  1. Energy efficiency
  2. Performance efficiency
  3. Ease of use
Energy Efficiency: The Cortex-M0 offers 60 DMIPS/mW versus Cortex-M3 which allows 31 DMIPS/mW. The Cortex-M0 also offers greatly improved energy efficiency over 8/16-bit processors due to its ability to complete a task in less time and go back to sleep quicker enabling extended battery life.
Performance Efficiency: The Cortex-M0 has dramatically improved code density when compared to 8/16-bit processors.
Ease of Use: Due to its deterministic instructions and interrupts, the Cortex-M0 allows 'cycle counting' which traditional 8/16-bit users are used to using thus taking the complexity out of 32-bit software development. Simplified programming is a key feature of Cortex-M0.
