LCD starburst character displaysIntroduction
Starburst Characters
One method in which alphanumeric characters can be built is from a 14-segment starburst unit.
Starburst segment units are commonly combined with 7-segment units (for numeric-only portions of the display) as well as with additional segments for various icons.
LCD starburst character segments are driven by segment drivers.
Each segment of the display is controlled individually to form letters, numbers, and basic symbols such as a plus symbol (+) or asterisk (*).
Segments are addressed in multiples of sixteen, typically for a 14-segment starburst with 2 additional segments available for icons.
Groups or lines of starburst character segments can be further matrixed to reduce display layout complexity.
A segment driver that can drive 4 x 32 segments, for example, can control a display with a maximum of 64 segments or 8 starburst characters with 16 "leftover" segments available for icons and other indicators.
Of course, custom displays can contain 7-segment numbers, starburst characters, and icons in endless combinations.
