LCD icon displays

Introduction

Icons

Icons can have any form and complexity – from a simple antenna symbol to a detailed mosaic. There is no limit to the effect. Consider the difference between the string Battery 50% Charged and a battery cell icon, where the charge level can be easily shown with a bar graph inside the icon. Additionally, blinking icons can be used to gather attention and to trigger a human interaction if necessary.
The look and feel of the display can be tailored to reflect the identity of the equipment originator. Company or product logos, icons, or other signs and indicators can be laid out without any pixeling effect. Imagine a flashing heart in a blood pressure meter, for example.
Icons are addressed as segments. They are conveniently controlled by a smaller segment display driver or with extra "leftover" segments from number and starburst displays. The use of icons can provide a very rich interface with very, very low overhead to operate.
