Analog Watch Motor Drivers

Introduction
NXP Semiconductors offers advanced CMOS ICs for driving stepper motors in battery-powered analog wrist watches. These advanced products have world-class low power-consumption* while achieving timing accuracies of 1 ppm. A quartz crystal is the only external component required. Most products are available in an unsawn wafer of solder-bumped die, as well as bare die in film frame carrier (FFC) or in tray.
* Customers using our older PCA1000 series analog watch motor drivers are encouraged to use our newer PCA2000 series of products which offer significantly lower power-consumption of 90nA, typical.
Features

Adaptive Motor Pulse

Many of our analog watch motor drivers feature NXP's fully-automatic, adaptive motor pulse:
Minimum power consumption for the entire watch is achieved through self-adaptation of the motor drive according to the required torque. The adaptive motor pulse feature uses step-detection to determine whether the motor has turned correctly or not. If a missed step occurs, the circuitry first corrects the position of the motor, then applies a full-drive motor pulse, followed by an adaptation routine. During adaptation, performance is monitored over a 4-minute interval, and if no errors occur, the duty-cycle and power consumption are lowered.
Step Detection Sequence and Corresponding Sampling Voltage

Other Features

  • A RESET function is provided for stopping the motor to accurately set time.
  • A battery End-Of-Life (EOL) warning feature for silver oxide or lithium batteries is available on some products.

More Information
Our older analog watch motor drivers are listed below for your convenience. Most of them are discontinued or withdrawn. While we are still supporting customers with existing designs, we encourage customers to use our newer PCA2000 series for all new designs as they offer superior performance while using substantially less power.
